More, Hannah. More, Hannah ( 1745–1833 ), writer and philanthropist, was born on 2 February 1745 at Fishponds, in the parish of Stapleton, a couple of miles north of Bristol, the fourth of the five daughters of Jacob More (1700–1783), schoolmaster, and Mary, the daughter of John Grace, a farmer at nearby Stoke.

Hannah More was born fourth out of five daughters on 2 nd February 1745, in Bristol, England. Her father Jacob was a school master at the local free school. They were from a middle to lower middle-class background. Hannah’s greatest bonds were with her sisters—Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Martha.
Hannah More was accused of being Methodistic – and the situation became the subject of various letters to the press and more than 20 pamphlets over a period of four years (1800-1804). The temper of the debate rose with Hannah being represented, for example, as the founder of a sect.

The sisters supported themselves as teachers, and in 1758 the three eldest set up a boarding school in Bristol.
