Finally, however, in 1868, he asked for protection from the British Empire to help them against the South African Boers. King Moshoeshoe I died two years later, in 1870. King Moshoeshoe I coincided during his reign with King Shaka of the Zulus.
Moshoeshoe died on 11 March 1870, marking the beginning of the colonial era of Basutoland. In the Cape Colony period between 1871 and 1884, Basutoland was treated similarly to other territories that had been forcibly annexed, much to the humiliation of the Basotho, leading to the Basuto Gun War in 1880–1881.

He was a key figure in defending Lesotho against European colonization and helping the country's independence. Moshoeshoe was the son of a Koena chief, and his original name was Lepoqo.

16 de jul. de 2017 · Foi aqui, no alto dessa montanha, que Moshoeshoe I (o primeiro rei do Lesoto) se auto-proclamou rei, uniu as tribos e lutou contra diversas tentativas de invasões. O nome Thaba-Bosiu significa a “Montanha da noite”, e Moshoeshoe I a nomeou assim porque chegaram no local em julho de 1824, de noite.
