Elizabeth Claypole (1629–1658) (copy of John Michael Wright) Second daughter of Oliver Cromwell. She married John Claypole of Northborough in 1646 near Peterborough. Claypole was the son of an old family friend. This is a copy of a painting by John Michael Wright which is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
When Elizabeth Claypool was born in 1567, in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, her father, Esquire James Cleypole Sr, was 37 and her mother, Joan Henson, was 28. Elizabeth Claypole (1658), National Portrait Gallery. Whatever his intentions, Wright did not return to Italy, rather he was joined in England by his family soon after. Despite his Roman Catholicism and the strong Protestantism of the Protectorate (1653–1659), Wright seems to have been able to find prestigious work.

Elizabeth Claypole, favourite daughter of Oliver Cromwell, is buried in Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. A small stone marks her burial place.
