Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield PC KG (22 September 1694 – 24 March 1773) was a British statesman and intellectual . Stanhope was born in London. He got his schooling at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. [1] After that, he went on the Grand Tour of the continent. He became gentleman of the bedchamber to the Prince of Wales .
Philip Stanhope's main claim to fame is the letters sent to him by his father, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, over a period of about 20 years. They were published in the 1770s by his widow Eugenia Stanhope, titled Letters to His Son , and have been reprinted numerous times since then.
He was the son of Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope and his wife, Katherine Wotton. [1] He inherited the title of Earl of Chesterfield on the death of his grandfather in 1656.
