Lise Meitner, Austrian-born physicist who, with her nephew Otto Frisch, elucidated the physical characteristics of nuclear fission. She and Otto Hahn were among the first to isolate the isotope protactinium-231, and with Hahn and Fritz Strassmann she investigated the products of neutron bombardment of uranium.
The Path to Nuclear Fission is about a brilliant Jewish woman, Lise Meitner. In 1907, Meitner came to Berlin as a shy physics student from Vienna, and met the worldly Otto Hahn. They became close friends and colleagues, and they would make scientific history when they discovered nuclear fission in 1938.
Yet Lise actually coined the term “nuclear fission” and worked out the actual physics in the first published explanation of the phenomena. The film honestly discusses the horrors of Nazism including the concentration camps, the tendency of scientists to care about science above all considerations, and the politics of science achievements and their recognition.
