One key to resolving this puzzle is recognizing the role played by several noblewomen, including Eleanor, Countess of Vermandois, in the initiation of construction of the church’s Gothic east end. Previous scholarship on Saint-Quentin has sought to identify the church’s design with Villard de Honnecourt and to see king Phillip Augustus providing the motivation and the resources for building.

Elisabeth was born around 1143 as the eldest daughter of Ralph I, Count of Vermandois and his second wife of Petronilla of Aquitaine. Petronilla was the sister of the famous Eleanor of Aquitaine who was both Queen of France and of England. Her parents’ marriage was controversial.

The second earl had married Isabella, daughter of Hugh, Count of Vermandois, widow of Robert de Beaumont, earl of Leicester. The arms of Warenne "checky or and azure" were adopted from the Vermandois coat after this marriage.
In 1149 Eleanor Capet Countess Vermandois was born to Ralph I Capet I Count Vermandois and Petronilla Poitiers (age 24). On 14 Oct 1152 [her father] Ralph I Capet I Count Vermandois died. On 21 Nov 1161 William III Count Nevers Count Auxerre and Tonnere (age 54) died.
