Under Maine’s leadership, Davenport developed from a college offering only associate degree programs to a fullyaccredited university providing undergraduate, graduate and online degrees. Maine served as president and chancellor from 1977 to 2000, introducing bachelor’s programs in the 1980s and master’s programs in the 1990s.
John Davenport. Davenport College was named for the Reverend John Davenport (1597 - 1670), a descendant of the Davenports of Cheshire, England, and one of the founders of the New Haven Colony. He was among the first to propose the establishment of a college in this colony. Completed in 1933, the buildings were designed by James Gamble Rogers.

Davenport College was first completed in 1933, in a mainly Georgian style but with a gothic facade. Like many of Yale’s residential colleges, Davenport was designed by James Gamble Rogers. The college was named for John Davenport, who founded Yale’s home city of New Haven, Connecticut.

Davenport has eased those nerves as I have been able to immerse myself in the community, coursework, and constant availability of my advisors. As a fourth year student Davenport has provided me with the opportunity to extend my education into a Bachelor's degree.
