Pretty Nelly was Eleanor ‘Nell’ Gwyn (1651?-87), one of the first actresses on the public stage. She was also Charles II’s self-proclaimed ‘Protestant whore’, the best-known royal mistress in English history. Most likely born in London, Gwyn grew up in its slums in the shadow of civil war. She never knew her father.
But in 1669, Nell became pregnant with her first child with the king and quit the theatre. The king moved her into a house in Lincoln's Inn Fields, where their son, also named Charles, was born in May 1670.
