Spider-Man has seen more videogame iterations than any other comic-book character -- and not all of them have been good. Last year's Spider-Man 2, based off the hit film, perfectly captured the thrill of swinging through Manhattan , while completely botching the story missions. The mistakes of the past have been addressed in Ultimate Spider-Man, a fitting name for one of the coolest comic-book videogames ever made.
Comics Connection
Launched five years ago, the Ultimate Spider-Man comic has been one of Marvel's best-selling books month after month. The Ultimate line stripped Spider-Man of his continuity baggage and returned him back to his roots. Once again, Peter Parker's a high school kid who finds that with great power comes great responsibility. It also leads to a lot of missed classes, late homework and girl troubles.
Oddly enough, Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 flip-flop in terms of strengths and problems. Where Spidey 2's story mode was atrocious, USM's is awesome. But the free-roaming mode and the swinging were the real strengths of Spider-Man 2 and conversely the one mild disappointment in USM. In the free roaming mode, there are spots of slowdown, both with swinging and in combat. This is most notable in the PS2 version, which can suffer framerate drops so severe they'll cost you a race or get you killed in a battle.
I felt Spider-Man 2 was a 7.0, redeemed only by its awesome swing mechanics and open city. So in my books, USM is a major improvement overall, with a stellar story mode and decent free-roaming system. I enjoyed swinging around enough to invest 25 hours in the game, but the first third remain the most memorable and most enjoyable. The PS2 version gets an extra ding, however, for having a bit too much slowdown. The PS2 Limited Edition doesn't add nearly enough to be worth the $10 extra charge.
