They acquired their noble status by playing an important role in the history of the Spanish Netherlands as well as during the Belgian Revolution, which lead to the creation of modern day Belgium. The Merode coat of arms derives from the one of the Counts of Barcelona.

Jean Phillipe Eugène de Merode Westerlo (1674-1732) became the head of the family. He was Capitan of the Guards Regiment (Trabants), Colonel of the Westerlo cavalry Regiment, and then Brigadier in 1704 under the Emperor Charles VI of Austria.
Jeanne de Mérode was born in Paris in 1853 as a daughter of Charles-Antoine Ghislain de Mérode-Westerloo, Marquess of Westerlo and Princess Marie-Nicolette d'Arenberg. She remained unmarried and devoted her life to religion and charitable works.
Het Kasteel van Westerlo, ook wel Kasteel de Merode of De Merodekasteel, is een kasteel te Westerlo in de provincie Antwerpen. In 1484 kwam het kasteel in het bezit van de familie de Merode, die het nog steeds bewoont.
