  6. Matthew Fontaine Maury was a U.S. naval officer, pioneer hydrographer, and one of the founders of oceanography. Maury entered the navy in 1825 as a midshipman, circumnavigated the globe (1826–30), and in 1836 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

  7. Leben. Als Teil seiner Ausbildung begleitete Maury Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette auf seiner Schiffsreise zurück nach Frankreich und nahm an der Weltumseglung der U.S.S. Vincennes von 1827–1830 teil. Nach der Ausbildung diente Maury von 1837 bis 1839 als Seeoffizier in der US-Marine.
