Kanpur, city, southwest-central Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. It lies in the Lower Ganges-Yamuna Doab, on the Ganges (Ganga) River about 45 miles (72 km) southwest of Lucknow. It was the site of a British military cantonment and was a focal point early in the Indian Mutiny.
