John Russell (14 October 1670 – 5 December 1735) was an administrator of the English East India Company. Life. The posthumous third son of Sir John Russell, 3rd Baronet and Frances Cromwell, he was on his mother's side a grandson of Oliver Cromwell. He was elected a factor of the East India Company in 1693, and went to Bengal in 1694.
In Lord Melbourne's government (1835-41), he was the most powerful minister; and he was himself twice prime minister. He presided over the Colonial Office in 1839-41 and from February to July 1855. The problems of Canada took up much of Russell's energies during his first term at the Colonial Office.
