Alexander Cambridge, 1st Earl of Athlone, was a member of the extended British royal family, as a great-grandson of King George III, a brother of Queen Mary, uncle to the Kings Edward VIII and George VI, and the husband of Princess Alice of Albany.
When he died in 1892, the title became extinct. The third creation was in 1917, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, for the former Prince Alexander of Teck, younger brother of Queen Mary and great‑uncle of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the subsidiary title of Viscount Trematon.
He relinquished his German title as Prince of Teck in 1917 and took the family name of Cambridge, becoming a member of peerage as the 1st Earl of Athlone. He served as an Army officer, and in 1923 he was appointed governor-general of South Africa.

Alexander was then known simply as Sir Alexander Cambridge (being entitled to the honorific sir due to his position as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order), until, on 7 November 1917, the King created him Earl of Athlone and Viscount Trematon.
