The Theme (Russian: Тема, romanized: Tema) is a 1979 Soviet comedy film directed by Gleb Panfilov. It tells the story of an egotistical playwright who thinks of himself as an artist, but who allows the system to make him write conformist plays. The film was heavily censored on its release in 1979.

Gleb Panfilov. Director: The Theme. Gleb Panfilov was born on 21 May 1934 in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russian SFSR, USSR [now Russia]. He was a director and writer, known for The Theme (1979), Vassa (1983) and Mat (1990). He was married to Inna Churikova. He died on 26 August 2023 in Russia.
