Adopted. 1997. The coat of arms of Burkina Faso contains a shield based on the national flag. Above the shield the name of the country is shown, while below it is the national motto, Unité, Progrès, Justice ( French for "Unity, Progress, Justice"). The supporters are two white stallions.
Das Wappen Burkina Fasos ist seit August 1997 in Gebrauch. Es zeigt in der Mitte ein Schild im Stile der Nationalflagge. Hinter diesem Schild kreuzen sich zwei Speere , deren oberen Enden von einer Schriftrolle mit der Beschriftung Burkina Faso , dem Landesnamen, umgeben sind.
Beschreibung und Bedeutung. Die Nationalflagge verwendet die traditionellen panafrikanischen Farben. Die Flagge ist in Rot und Grün horizontal geteilt, in der Mitte belegt mit einem goldenen fünfzackigen Stern. Rot steht für das von den Märtyrern der Revolution vergossene Blut und die Opfer des Volkes von Burkina Faso.

Five-day War with Mali. On Christmas Day 1985, tensions with Mali over the mineral-rich Agacher Strip erupted in a war that lasted five days and killed about 100 people. The conflict ended after mediation by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny of Ivory Coast. The conflict is known as the "Christmas war" in Burkina Faso.
