The Pacific gull was first described by English ornithologist John Latham in 1801 from a Thomas Watling drawing, where the local name had been recorded as Troo-gad-dill. Its specific epithet refers to the Pacific Ocean.

John Latham (1740-1837), ornithologist, was born on 27 June 1740 at Eltham, Kent, England, son of John Latham, a surgeon. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, studied anatomy under the radical surgeon John Hunter, and after completing his medical education at London hospitals practised medicine for many years at Dartford.
