The Great Dictator Synopsis. During World War I, an anonymous private, (Chaplin) fighting in the army of Tomania, effects the valiant rescue of an officer named Schultz, but suffers loss of memory when the plane in which they are flying crashes into a tree.
The barber, mistaken for a dictator, addresses millions over the radio. In his address, he expresses disapproval of fascist views and advocates for love, liberty, and world peace. He encourages solidarity among the nation and instills inspiration and confidence into his citizens.

Chaplin spent many months drafting and re-writing the speech for the end of the film, a call for peace from the barber who has been mistaken for Hynkel. Many people criticized the speech, and thought it was superfluous to the film.
