    Shelton was born in Los Angeles, the second of four daughters. She went to Eagle Rock High School. She attended UCLA for film and theatre but dropped out when she was cast in a leading role for the 1997 adventure film, Warriors of Virtue.

    Her character's son, Wes Hicks is a tribute to late horror director, Wes Craven.
    Despite being fiction, she is the same age as Neve Campbelland hypothetically could have went to high school with her, like their characters.
    She appeared in Never Been Kissed alongside original Scream (1996) cast member, Drew Barrymore (as well as eventual co-star David Arquette).
    She lost out on the role of Tatum Riley in the original film, which was given to Rose McGowan.
