Gameplay consists of frequent combat scenarios with characters punching and kicking or using their axe to slash/stab/impale enemies. Some larger enemies are opened up to intense finishing moves showing enemies being ripped apart, dismembered, or decapitated.

God of War Ragnarök is a third-person action-adventure game. It features an over-the-shoulder player-controlled camera, and the game is presented with no camera cuts or loading screens. The gameplay is similar to the previous installment, God of War (2018), including being single-player-only.
