Background. Metro Pictures Corporation was founded on June 23, 1915, by Richard A. Rowland (1880-1947) and Louis B. Mayer (1884-1957), and started out distributing films produced by Solax Studios. However, Mayer left the studio soon after operations began to form his own company, Louis B. Mayer Pictures Corporation, in 1918.

Mayer, Metro Pictures and the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation merged to create MGM in 1924, their starter logo as a company featured a live Leo the Lion turning his head, inside a circle flanked by a ribbon-like reel of film, with the motto ‘Ars gratia artis’ (art for art’s sake, in Latin).
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was founded in 1924 as part of the merge between Metro-Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Productions. The company's first on-screen logo took elements of the original Goldwyn Pictures logo.
