After several small television roles, Margulies received wide recognition for her starring role as Carol Hathaway in the NBC medical drama series ER (1994–2009), for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award and six Screen Actors Guild Awards, in addition to four Golden Globe Award nominations.
Until she became a regular in ER (1994), she guest starred in several television series and a pilot. Since then, she has starred in several films, including Ghost Ship (2002) , Evelyn (2002) , and Snakes on a Plane (2006) , and headlines the CBS drama The Good Wife (2009) , for which she has won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Her character, nurse Carol Hathaway, was supposed to overdose on pills and die. Instead, Carol overdosed, lived and became one-half of one of the most popular primetime couples of the 1990s, according to CheatSheet.com.

As a child, Julianna lived in New York, England and France. Is the only cast member of ER (1994) to have ever received an Emmy Award, plus she has been awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series two years in a row (1998 and 1999).
