The acquisition would provide Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof.
On March 20, 2019, The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox became effective. As a result, all Fantastic Four related films that were in development were put "on hold" and eventually cancelled.
On July 20, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige announced that many projects, including a Fantastic Four reboot, were in development.
On December 10, 2020, during Disney's 2020 Investor Day, Kevin Feige announced that Jon Watts would be directing the film.
On April 29, 2022, Deadline reported that Jon Watts had exited the film.
On July 23, 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige announced that the film would be released on November 8, 2024. That same day, it was revealed that the film was scheduled to begin production in 2023. Four days later, Kevin Feige revealed that the film would not be an origin story.
