At level 55 – 90 the best in slot would be Modified Crossbow with Power bolts. This is the first time I would recommend to imbue it with both mana leech and critical damage; why? Because this can be used still at level 70, when you get the drill bolts , attack 56.
Ammunition is used with two-handed Distance Weapons, mostly by Paladins. Bolts can only be used with crossbows, and arrows can only be used with bows. To use ammunition, you must equip the bow or crossbow in your hand, and place a quiver containing ammunition in your extra slot.

At the moment I'm sitting at level 85 and using ornate + drill bolts with 92 distance (+2 from armor); according to this calc, my avg. hit lies around 234 damage, which is substantially higher than the 180 from composite+onyx. With an arbalest, the average would be 237.
