  1. The string quartet in G minor, Op. 13, is the earliest of Nielsen's four published quartets. It was composed from December 1887 until February 1888. It belongs among the works of his youth including two other complete quartets and some individual movements for string quartet.

  2. Nielsen composed the quartet, Op. 44, between two of his major achievements: the opera Maskarade (CNW 2) and the music for the melodrama Hr. Oluf han rider– (CNW 7). The first two movements of the quartet were dated at the beginning of 1906, while the last two ones were finished in the summer.

  3. The quartet, Op. 14, was composed in 1897–98, while Nielsen was running Thygesminde, the farm of his parents-in-law near Kolding, Jutland. He presumably started on the quartet during summer 1897, finishing the first movement in December.
