Peterborough is located in the county of Cambridgeshire, Eastern England, five miles west of the town of Whittlesey, and 73 miles north of London. Peterborough lies six miles south of the Lincolnshire border, and was historically in the county of Northamptonshire.
Peterborough lies in the St. Lawrence Lowlands ecoregion, just south of the Canadian Shield and approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of Lake Ontario. The city is sited on a series of rapids in the Otonabee River, approximately halfway between the river's source ( Katchewanooka Lake) and its mouth ( Rice Lake ).
Located in the East Anglia region of England, the area borders the surrounding counties of Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. The population of the district was 202,259 making it the second-largest district by population in East Anglia (after Norwich).
