The player character Michael Afton, nicknamed Mike (jokingly called Eggs Benedict), is a new employee of Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental (a sister company of Fazbear Entertainment that rents animatronics for children's parties).
Michael Afton took up the name Mike Schmidt to work at the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, presumably to avoid any questions about his identity. He was paid $120 dollars for his first week for doing his job, as known by a check given after finishing Night 5 .
It is believed by many that Mike Schmidt was an alias used by Michael Afton, the son of William Afton and the main protagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location. Although there is not a specific piece of evidence that makes this claim irrefutable, there are numerous subtle hints that may suggest this is the case.
The Afton family appear to be of British origin, as William, Elizabeth and Michael had British accent when talking. The word "Afton" is Swedish for "night" or "afternoon". The Afton family is thought to be from Utah given that Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is located in Hurricane, Utah in The Silver Eyes.
