  1. hide. (Top) Ancestry. References. Dorothea of Denmark, Duchess of Mecklenburg. Dorothea of Denmark (1528 – 11 November 1575), was a Danish princess and a Duchess consort of Mecklenburg. She was the daughter of king Frederick I of Denmark and Sophie of Pomerania. She was married to Christopher, Duke of Mecklenburg-Gadebusch in 1573.

The family came to the Netherlands in 1523 when their father was deposed, and were cared for by Margaret of Austria.

  4. Born in Kolding, Dorothea was the youngest child of Christian III of Denmark-Norway and Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg. She married William, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg on 12 October 1561. When her husband died in 1592, she became regent for her under age son George.
