Guinea (/ ˈ ɡ ɪ n i / ⓘ GHIN-ee), officially the Republic of Guinea (French: République de Guinée), is a coastal country in West Africa. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Cote d'Ivoire to the southeast, and Sierra Leone and Liberia to the south.
O país divide-se em quatro regiões geográficas: uma faixa costeira estreita (a Baixa Guiné ); as terras altas cobertas de pastagens de Futa Jalom (a Média Guiné ); a savana do norte (a Alta Guiné ); e uma região de floresta húmida no sueste (a Guiné Florestal ).
No século XIX, a região foi colonizada e passou a ser referida Guiné Portuguesa. Após a independência, declarada em 1973 e reconhecida em 1974, o nome de sua capital, Bissau, foi adicionada ao nome do país para evitar confusão com a Guiné (a antiga Guiné Francesa) e a Guiné Equatorial (antiga Guiné Espanhola ).
