Na arte, frottage (do francês "frotter", em português"friccionar") é um método surrealista e "automático" de produção criativa desenvolvido por Max Ernst. No frottage o artista utiliza um lápis ou outra ferramenta de desenho e faz uma "fricção" sobre uma superfície texturizada.

In 1927, Max Ernst developed the grattage as an application of the frottage technique in painting. Richly textured, relief-like materials such as wood, wire mesh, pieces of broken glass, and cord were placed under a canvas primed with numerous layers of paint.
Max Ernst experimented with the technique of frottage, or rubbing, as a way to probe the subconscious mind. He created these images by placing paper atop various materials—wood floorboards, lengths of twine, wire mesh, crumpled paper, crusts of bread—then rubbing the surface with a pencil or crayon.
Ernst called his process frottage (French for “rubbing”) and claimed it as a form of Surrealist automatism, whereby an artist attempts to let the unconscious guide his hand in the creation of an image.
30 de dez. de 2014 · In 1925, Ernst began using the technique of frottage, which involves laying a sheet of paper over a textured surface and rubbing it with charcoal or graphite (the same process can be used to create a rubbing of a coin or an engraved surface).
