A selective school is a school that admits students on the basis of some sort of selection criteria, usually academic. The term may have different connotations in different systems and is the opposite of a comprehensive school, which accepts all students, regardless of aptitude.

That is, they would be open to everyone, regardless of wealth or social class, so long as academic entry requirements were met.
NSW selective high schools are public schools and do not charge attendance fees – except for boarding at agricultural high schools. Schools may ask parents to make payments for curriculum-related resources, such as textbooks and materials needed for some subjects.
