Born at Carlton Gardens, London, Jocelyn was the eldest son and heir apparent of Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden, and the Hon. Maria Frances Catherine, daughter of Thomas Stapleton, 12th Baron le Despencer.
Jocelyn, Robert, Earl of Roden, a distinguished Orangeman, was born 27th October 1788. His great-grandfather, Robert Jocelyn, Lord-Chancellor of Ireland, was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Jocelyn, in 1755, while his grandfather was created Earl of Roden in 1771.
Robert Jocelyn, 4th Earl of Roden was born on 22 November 1846. He was the son of Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn and Lady Frances Elizabeth Cowper. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.
