Mangaladevi Kannagi Temple is the oldest temple in India built around 1st century AD and is located in present day border of Theni District of Tamil Nadu and Idukki District of Kerala, about 7 km from Pazhiyankudi in Theni district and 15 km from Thekkady in Idukki. Kannagi is an icon hailed in Tamil Epic Cilappatikaram.
Mangalore was named after the deity Mangaladevi, the presiding deity of the Mangaladevi Temple, or a synonym of the goddess Tara of the Vajrayana Buddhist sect. According to local legend, a princess named Parimala or Premaladevi from Malabar renounced her kingdom and became a disciple of Matsyendranath, the founder of the Nath tradition.

History. In Tulunadu, in the 10th century, Kundavarma, the most famous king of Alupa dynasty was ruling. Mangalore was the capital of his kingdom. At that time, there came two sages named Machhendranatha and Gorakanatha from Nepal. They reached Mangalapura, crossing the river Nethravathi.
