Ferdinand I (Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad; 24 August 1865 – 20 July 1927), nicknamed Întregitorul ("the Unifier"), was King of Romania from 1914 until his death in 1927. Ferdinand was the second son of Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern, and Infanta Antónia of Portugal, daughter of Ferdinand II of Portugal and Maria II of Portugal.

Romania's independence from the Ottoman Empire was recognized in 1878 by the Treaty of Berlin. In an expression of full sovereignty, the principality was elevated to a kingdom in 1881, with Carol I becoming King of Romania. Carol I died in 1914, and was succeeded by his nephew, Ferdinand I.
Ferdinand presided over the country’s entry into World War I on the side of the Triple Entente powers against the Central Powers on 27 August 1916. At the Crown Council held at Cotroceni Palace, King Ferdinand declared: ‘’with tormented soul, I decided to accomplish my duty towards the Romanian people whose destiny I rule’’.
