Son of the mathematician Ada Lovelace and nobleman William King, Byron was shipped off to the Royal Navy in the 1850s. However, he later deserted his post and came back to London. On 1 September 1862, upon the death of his elder brother, Byron Noel, Viscount Ockham – who had succeeded his grandmother, Lady Byron, as twelfth Baron Wentworth – Ralph himself became thirteenth Baron Wentworth, and Viscount Ockham (the courtesy title of Lord Lovelace's heir-apparent).

On his death in 1833, the title passed to his eldest son, the eighth Baron. In 1835, the eighth Baron married as his first wife the Hon. (Augusta) Ada Byron, the only daughter of the poet Lord Byron and his wife 11th Baroness Wentworth ( Anne Isabella Milbanke), who was a descendant of the extinct Barons Lovelace.
