Defending champion John McEnroe defeated Jimmy Connors in the final, 6–1, 6–1, 6–2 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships. It was his third Wimbledon singles title and sixth major singles title overall.
Two-time defending champion Martina Navratilova defeated Chris Evert Lloyd in the final, 7–6 (7–5), 6–2 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships. It was her fifth Wimbledon singles title and tenth major singles title overall.
No British man won the singles event at Wimbledon between Fred Perry in 1936 and Andy Murray in 2013, while no British woman has won since Virginia Wade in 1977, although Annabel Croft and Laura Robson won the Girls' Championship in 1984 and 2008 respectively. The Championship was first televised in 1937.
