Simon Robert Armitage CBE, FRSL (born 26 May 1963) is an English poet, playwright, musician and novelist. He was appointed Poet Laureate on 10 May 2019. He is professor of poetry at the University of Leeds. He has published over 20 collections of poetry, starting with Zoom! in 1989.

Simon Armitage is the current national Poet Laureate (2019-2029). He is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds and was elected to serve as Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford for 2015-2019.
His poetry is often influenced by music, a connection he pursues in his nonfiction book Gig (2008). His nonfiction book Walking Home (2012), an account of his journey along the Pennine Way, was a Sunday Times Bestseller and was short-listed for the 2012 Portico Prize.

Biography. In May 2019, Simon Armitage (b. 1963) was named as the UK’s Poet Laureate, an appointment greeted with delight by many in the poetry world and beyond. Armitage burst onto the poetry scene with Zoom! in 1989 and quickly established himself as the most high-profile poet in the group dubbed ‘The New Generation’.
