Jean Gigoux, né Jean François Gigoux le 6 janvier 1806 à Besançon et mort à Paris le 11 décembre 1894, est un peintre, dessinateur, lithographe, illustrateur et collectionneur d'art français.

Though described as “the most famous portrait painter of the age”, Gigoux is now best known for his relationship with Madame Balzac and the infamous rumour that they were in bed together, when the great novelist was dying in the next room along.

Jean Gigoux. Cet article est extrait de l'ouvrage Larousse « Dictionnaire de la peinture ». Peintre et collectionneur français (Besançon, Doubs, 1806 – id. 1894). Sa formation était déjà achevée lorsqu'il arriva à Paris. Ami de Balzac, habitué du Salon de l'Arsenal, il exprima un Romantisme poétique un peu facile, baptisé style " troubadour ".
