Pieter Huys (c.1519 – c.1584) was a Flemish Renaissance painter. He is known of his early life, and though he was mostly active in Antwerp, his place of birth and death is not certain. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1545, and his last dated work is from 1577.

HUYS, Pieter. (b. ca. 1520, Antwerpen, d. ca. 1584, Antwerpen) Biography. Flemish painter and engraver, part of a family of artists. The brothers Pieter Huys and Frans Huys (c. 1522-c. 1562) both worked as engravers for the print publisher Hieronymus Cock and the firm of Christoph Plantin.
Pieter Huys was one of the most skilful successors of Hieronymus Bosch. While dipping into Bosch’s iconographic repertoire of hellish monstrosities, he also learnt to master the technical construction of a coherent whole worthy of the graphic compositions of the master of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Jan Mandijn, his illustrious contemporary.

The Last Judgment. Around 1500, the Netherlander Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450-1516) created images of hell as a fantastical wasteland of torment that relied heavily on the hold that belief in monsters had on the imagination of his contemporaries. Pieter Huys was prominent among his many imitators.
