Geoffrey William Marcy (born September 29, 1954) is an American astronomer. He was an early influence in the field of exoplanet detection, discovery, and characterization. Marcy was a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, and an adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University.
Geoffrey Marcy is a renowned astronomer who led the discovery of 70 of the first 100 planets around other stars. He also invented the iodine Doppler technique, launched the Keck Planet Finder, and searched for extraterrestrial intelligence.

27 de mai. de 2021 · The US National Academy of Sciences terminated Geoff Marcy's membership, the first time it has done so for a proven case of sexual harassment. The move follows complaints by two scientists who cited public reports of Marcy's inappropriate behaviour and his continued affiliation with Berkeley.

The issue wasn’t the science, which focused on the detection of exoplanets, but its authorship. To the dismay of many astronomers, Geoff Marcy was listed as the third of 16 authors.
