Dreger is a Guggenheim Fellow, an award-winning writer, and the founder of East Lansing Info, a local news operation for which she served as publisher for a decade. The recipient of nine teaching awards, she has taught history of medicine, history of science, gender and sexuality studies, bioethics, and guest-taught local journalism.
Alice Dreger is a historian and bioethicist who studies and advocates for people with atypical bodies. She has written books on conjoined twins, intersex people and the future of normal, and gave a TED talk on anatomy and destiny.

My research, writing, and speaking on sex and gender issues started with my Ph.D. dissertation work on the history of what happened to people with intersex conditions in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. (During that period, these people were labeled “hermaphrodites.”)
Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and intersexed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?
