Nevil Maskelyne FRS FRSE (/ ˈ m æ s k ə l ɪ n /; 6 October 1732 – 9 February 1811) was the fifth British Astronomer Royal. He held the office from 1765 to 1811. He was the first person to scientifically measure the mass of the planet Earth.
Nevil Maskelyne (born Oct. 6, 1732, London—died Feb. 9, 1811, Greenwich, London) was a British astronomer noted for his contribution to the science of navigation. Maskelyne was ordained a minister in 1755, but his interest in astronomy had been aroused by the eclipse of July 25, 1748.
