Helene-Louise de Mecklembourg-Schwerin Duchess of Orléans and her son. Commissioned for the historic galleries at the Palace of Versailles by Louis-Philippe in 1839, the portrait of his daughter-in-law is one of the first in a series painted by Frans Xaver Winterhalter.
Duchess Helene spent her early years in Germany at the Remplin Palace in Mecklenburg until it was largely destroyed in a fire instigated by the local Nazi authorities during the night 10 to 11 April 1940.
