Alfred Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 13th Duke of Hamilton and 10th Duke of Brandon TD, DL (6 March 1862 – 16 March 1940) was a Scottish nobleman and sailor. Born at Shanklin, Isle of Wight, he was the son of Captain Charles Henry Hamilton, a descendant of Lt.-Gen. James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton, and Elizabeth Anne Hill.
In 1895, Alfred Douglas-Hamilton inherited the Dukedom of Hamilton from his cousin William Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton and became Alfred Douglas-Hamilton, 13th Duke of Hamilton. Alfred Douglas-Hamilton was the great-great-great grandson of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton through a collateral line.
Hamilton Palace’s final keeper was Lieutenant Alfred Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, William’s fourth cousin. He served with the Royal Navy until 1890, when Alfred caught a rare tropical disease during a tour of duty and was partially paralysed.
Alfred Douglas Hamilton succeeded his kinsman, William Alexander Louis Stephen, 12th Duke of Hamilton and 9th Duke of Brandon, in 1895. He served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire. His various military posts included: hon. Lt.-Col. 4th Battalion H.L.I.[?], hon. Col. 6th Battalion Scottish Rifles (for which he received a Territorial Decoration), and Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
