Earls of Richmond. The 1st Earl of Richmond was the Breton warrior Alan Rufus (c. 1040–1093). He was related to both the duke of Normandy and the duke of Brittany. He was a grandson of Duke Geoffrey I of Brittany and Hawise of Normandy and the second son of Odo, Count of Penthièvre.
Alan Rufus, alternatively Alanus Rufus , Alan ar Rouz , Alain le Roux or Alan the Red (c. 1040 – 1093), 1st Lord of Richmond, was a Breton nobleman, kinsman and companion of William the Conqueror (Duke William II of Normandy) during the Norman Conquest of England.

After Alan’s death in 1093, Richmond Castle and its estates passed in turn to two of his younger brothers, Alan Niger, ‘The Black’, and Stephen. By 1136 it was held by Stephen’s son, also Alan (II) Niger (c.1100–1146), who was the first to style himself Earl of Richmond.
4 de jun. de 2020 · Stephen created Alan 1st Earl of Richmond. The title Earl of Richmond had been held by Alan's uncle, Alan Rufus, who had died heirless. Additionally, Stephen recognized Alan as Earl of Cornwall, in recognition of his other uncle Brian who had formerly possessed Cornwall.
