Born to a noble family in Provence, he entered the Naval Guards in October 1743 and served the next year off Toulon on the Solide, on which he participated in the Battle of Cape Sicié in February 1744. Next he served in the West Indies and in 1746 took part in the expedition of D'Anville in Acadia.
