Abstract. Nanye’hi was a Cherokee warrior and diplomat who held the traditional office of Ghighua, or Beloved Woman, after helping the Cherokee to victory over the Creek nation during a conflict. Nanye’hi assumed the name Nancy Ward after marrying Bryant Ward, an Irish trader, in the 1750s.
