Ellison Shoji Onizuka (Japanese: エリソン・ショージ・オニヅカ, 鬼塚 承次, Hepburn: Onizuka Shōji, June 24, 1946 – January 28, 1986) was an American astronaut, engineer, and U.S. Air Force flight test engineer from Kealakekua, Hawaii, who successfully flew into space with the Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-51-C.

He was the first Asian American astronaut, the first astronaut of Japanese descent, the first person from Hawai‘i in space, and the first Buddhist in space.
Ellison Onizuka was a USAF colonel and a NASA astronaut who flew on STS 51-C and STS 51-L. He died in the Challenger disaster in 1986 and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
