The fourth son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch and his wife, Louisa Montagu Douglas Scott, he was born in January 1868 at Bowhill, Selkirkshire. [1]

  5. On the death of Baron Montagu in 1845, his Montagu estates reverted to the 5th Duke (d. 1884), who later settled Clitheroe and Beaulieu on his second son Henry John Douglas-Scott-Montagu, created Baron Montagu of Beaulieu in 1885, to whom Ditton also passed on his mother’s death in 1895.

He was also a champion of the historic vehicle movement and founder of the National Motor Museum.
