William Hare is a former Militech corporal discharged for showing signs of an incoming cyberpsychosis.
William Hare signed up to serve with Militech at 17 years old after seeing one of their posters. Witnessing their multi-million eurodollar equipment and armored soldiers, filled him with a sense of adventure and power. He proudly notes being 3rd Light Division, 155th Infantry Regiment, getting everything he wanted with Militech. However, seven years in Brazil turned his dream job into a nightmare. Stuck in the jungle, fighting just to survive, killing and watching his comrades be killed around him left him not just changed, but broken, haunted by nightmares and flashbacks he could not keep away. When he finally returned to Night City, his post traumatic stress disorder was already developing into early signs of cyberpsychosis, which earned him a discharge from Militech. With nobody to blame, he started hyperfixating on politicians currently in charge and their corruption. Hare stopped attending his veteran support group and got involved in plotting an assassination of Weldon Holt, the acting mayor of Night City in 2077. In addition to this, feeling betrayed by the system, he will openly express violent hatred towards anyone in the line of procuring medication, from corporations to ripperdocs.
Hare's final attempt at self-help lead him into stealing a packet of baloperidol from a local ripperdoc. Watson fixer Regina Jones had been contracted to retrieve the items, not knowing much of who stole them or why. Her choice of runner for this job was V, who will be notified of the contract when in the immediate surroundings of Hare's Kabuki apartment.
Hare will not be welcoming, expecting a wide selection of enemies at the door and will greet V with his shotgun. He will however be open to discuss the situation and elaborate his views in a civil manner in case of his order being obeyed. He will explain that the drugs he had stolen in desperate attempt to get better did not work, accusing ripperdocs of being criminals for deceiving people they were supposed to be healing, but will aggressively deny any insinuation that he is actually suffering from cyberpsychosis. His increasing desperation pushed forward by very vivid memories of war caused him to relive all of the events from the most bitter moments of his past as if in a braindance. This followed by knowing how his regiment, those he considered brothers, entirely forgot of him even existing as soon as he had been discharged, adding depression-induced anger to the list of struggles he must suffer.
If V convinces Hare not to go after Holt due to it being just a meaningless act of terrorism leaving a hole another corrupt politician will fill, he will face reality through existential crisis, losing a single motivational drive in life and shoot himself once V leaves his room. Threatening him will turn incite hostility and they will have to kill or incapacitate him.
CORPORAL HARE
When a 17-year-old William Hare first saw a poster promoting service in Militech's paramilitary forces, he finally understood his purpose in life. As his impressionable eyes scanned the multi-million-dollar equipment and armored soldiers, he felt a brutal power and desire for adventure swell inside him. How could a kid who spent his whole life in the slums of Rancho Coronado resist? The promotional specialists in Militech's recruitment office certainly think so, and they're usually right. Hare enlisted and eventually rose to the rank of Corporal. He got everything he dreamed of plus more - combat military-grade cyberware, a sense of power, camaraderie and adventure. As for the latter, there are some parts he'd rather forget - especially the ones he's forbidden to talk about. After Brazil, everything changed. He lost his good health and came back to Night City a veteran, but with no hope of ever returning to active duty. That's when Hare first asked himself - had Militech taken away more than they gave him?
